Diamonds are among the most versatile of gem stones. They
match everything and look good on anyone. Additionally,
they come in many varieties and styles. These styles are
known as cuts. Diamonds come in different cuts, and the
popularity of the cut, and how it enhances the diamond,
determines its expensiveness. Indeed, two diamonds of equal
weight, but of different cut, can have a price difference
of hundreds of dollars.

Round cut. Diamonds in the round cut are the most popular.
They are cut to look like circles. A round brilliant cut
has special faceting to make it sparkle more. This is one
of the most expensive cuts of diamond. Rounds are very
popular on engagement rings because round cut diamonds look
beautiful as part of a multi-stone ring or as a solitaire.
The round looks nice on virtually any hand.

The princess cut diamond is not very popular. It looks good
as a solitaire or in a three-stone setting with smaller
princess cut diamonds on either side of a large diamond. A
princess cut looks like a square. It can also be faceted to
sparkle. Rings made with princess cut diamonds tend to make
fingers look shorter and stubbier, so you should avoid them
if you have short fingers. However, you can wear a princess
cut with impunity if you have long fingers.

One of the least expensive of cuts for diamonds is the
emerald cut. It costs hundreds less than the round
brilliant. It is rectangular in shape and appears to be
layered. It looks like an emerald, that is why the name.
Earlier, the emerald being softer than the diamond would be
fractured in the process of cutting. Then they discovered a
special way to cut an emerald that would preserve its
integrity, and emeralds gained popularity. Soon it was
discovered that diamonds could be cut in the same way and
the cut got its name from the emerald.

Diamonds with a marquis cut look like thin ovals with
pointed ends. This cut makes the fingers look longer and
adds elegance to any hand. This cut is already more popular
than the emerald cut. It is usually worn as a solitaire or
as the center of a multi-stone ring. However, if all the
stones are not marquis cut, a multi-stone ring with
something else as the center looks odd with marquis side
stones.

Baguette and pave are some other styles of diamonds that are
mainly used for side stones, to provide accents. If you know
what type of cut you like, and what suits you best, you can
go ahead and get your ring set with diamonds that you love
to look at.
